Rumman Chowdhury is a globally recognised expert in responsible AI, algorithmic accountability, and technology governance. She is the founder of Humane Intelligence, where she pioneered community-driven AI audits and advanced the concept of a “right to repair” for AI systems. Her work bridges rigorous technical evaluation with real-world public impact, developing scalable and inclusive models for ethical AI oversight.
Previously, Chowdhury joined Accenture as its first Managing Director for Responsible AI, where she built and led a global practice advising organisations on responsible technology development and deployment. Prior to Accenture, she served as Engineering Director at Twitter, leading the META (Machine Learning Ethics, Transparency, and Accountability) team, one of the earliest hybrid research and engineering groups dedicated to auditing large-scale social media AI systems for bias, harm, and risk. In this role, she also launched the world’s first AI bias bounty program, establishing a novel framework for community-driven accountability in machine learning systems.
Chowdhury began her career in public policy and economic analysis, with roles at the Council of State Governments and in market forecasting within the private sector. She has since worked extensively with national governments, multilateral institutions, and civil society organisations to shape ethical technology policy, translating complex technical issues into actionable governance frameworks.
She holds a PhD in Political Science and brings deep social science expertise and academic rigor to the field of responsible AI. Her early academic research fostered a systems-level understanding of power, institutions, and structural inequality, perspectives that continue to inform her applied work in AI ethics and governance.
Chowdhury remains deeply engaged with global research and policy communities. She is currently the Responsible AI Fellow at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Cambridge Forum on AI, and sits on the board of the Oxford Internet Institute.
