Dian Triansyah Djani

Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani, a veteran Indonesian diplomat, advocates for Indonesia’s independent, stabilising role globally. As G20 Co-Sherpa and advisor to the Foreign Minister, he promotes multilateral diplomacy and neutrality amid geopolitical tensions, emphasising sustainable development and non-alignment, notably during Indonesia’s 2022 G20 Presidency.

Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani is one of Indonesia’s most respected diplomatic strategists. He boasts a career that spans nearly four decades across multilateral, regional, and economic diplomacy. At the core of his work lies a clear vision that Indonesia can and should play an independent, stabilising role in a fractured global landscape.

Djan is currently serving as Indonesia’s G20 Co-Sherpa and is a Special Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He played a pivotal role during Indonesia’s 2022 G20 Presidency, coordinating the Sherpa Track and chairing negotiations that led to the Bali Leaders’ Declaration. Achieving a breakthrough in multilateral diplomacy amid economic strain, geopolitical tensions, and post-pandemic uncertainty.

As Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2016 to 2021, Djani advocated for climate resilience, sustainable development, and South-South cooperation. His remarks at various international fora continue to reflect a persistent truth: when global powers retreat into rivalry, it is developing countries that pay the price. Djani has warned that the redirection of funds toward conflict response is undermining the world’s ability to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the global climate agenda.

Djani offers Indonesia’s free and active foreign policy as a model of constructive non-alignment. “Indonesia will not take sides,” he has said, referring to the US-China economic rivalry. That neutrality, far from being passive, enables Indonesia to act as a bridge-builder ideally placed to convene dialogue in an era when multilateralism is under strain.

Earlier in his career, Djani served as Director General for ASEAN Cooperation, Director for Multilateral Trade and Investment, and a trade negotiator representing Indonesia in WTO and APEC meetings, as well as across the Non-Aligned Movement, G77, D8, and other strategic alliances.

In addition to his diplomatic work, Djani founded Indonesia’s WTO Forum and publishes Sekilas WTO, one of the country’s few consistent commentaries on global trade dynamics. He is also a guest lecturer on international negotiations and trade at universities across Indonesia and abroad.
