Luana Lopes Lara is the cofounder and president of Kalshi, the world’s first federally regulated prediction market and one of the fastest-scaling financial exchanges of the past decade.
Trained as a professional ballerina, Lopes Lara learned early how systems enforce discipline and how power operates when rules are opaque. Her teenage years at the Bolshoi Theater School were defined by extreme competition and pressure, running parallel to an academic track that produced medals at national astronomy and mathematics Olympiads. That dual exposure to physical precision and abstract reasoning shaped the way she later approached markets: probabilistic, rigorous, and unsentimental.
After a brief professional ballet career in Europe, Lopes Lara left the stage for MIT, where she studied computer science and mathematics. There she met her eventual cofounder, Tarek Mansour. The duo shared a conviction that most financial decisions are, at their core, bets on future events—yet there was no direct or transparent way to trade on probabilities themselves. That insight became Kalshi.
Founded in 2018 and backed by Y Combinator, Kalshi spent nearly two years with no product and no revenue as prediction markets sat in a legal grey zone. More than 40 law firms declined to help until Lopes Lara secured approval from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission in 2020, making Kalshi the only fully regulated prediction market exchange in the United States.
Her defining leadership moment came in 2023, when regulators blocked Kalshi from offering election contracts. Against investor advice, Lopes Lara argued the company should sue the CFTC. The case went to federal court; Kalshi won. The ruling allowed the first legal US election markets in over a century and cemented Kalshi’s position as a serious financial institution rather than a speculative novelty.
Since then, Kalshi’s growth has been explosive. Weekly trading volume now exceeds $1 billion. The platform has integrated with Robinhood and Webull, partnered with Google Finance and major sports leagues, and expanded onto blockchain infrastructure via Solana. What began as an academic idea now functions as a live, global signal; aggregating beliefs across politics, economics, sports, and culture.
Luana Lopes Lara operates at the intersection of technology, regulation, capital markets, and geopolitics, building systems that translate collective belief into measurable price. She has navigated US regulators, global investors, and cross-border teams while scaling through periods of crisis and uncertainty. Her work speaks directly to regions where forecasting risk, policy direction, and market sentiment is central to growth.
