Sebastian Coe's Biography

In the midst of such a varied career, it’s easy to forget that Sebastian Coe is one of Britain’s greatest athletes. A revered long-distance runner, his elegant style still features prominently in Olympic montages. But he has also become a symbol of the UK on the world stage; a trusted representative of the country in sporting and political arenas alike.

Coe’s career began at the age of 12 with Sheffield's Hallamshire Harriers. Guided by his father, Coe's exceptional talent surfaced in 1977 when he clinched the 800m title at the European Indoor Championship. His illustrious career boasts numerous world records and 2 Olympic gold medals. His iconic rivalry with Steve Ovett dominated the middle-distance scene.

Retiring from athletics in 1990, Sebastian Coe transitioned into politics. He was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament in 1992 for Falmouth and Camborne. But he lost his seat in Tony Blair’s 1997 New Labour landslide. Coe remained a hugely popular figure in the party and was subsequently appointed Chief of Staff to William Hague. In 2000, he was appointed a life peer, becoming Lord Coe of Ranmore.

2012 olympic games

His sporting legend and political nous made Lord Coe the obvious choice to lead London’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympic Games. Paris was the firm favourite so London’s win owed much to Coe’s diplomatic and leadership skills.

Post-games, Coe served as Chairman of the British Olympic Association and later as President of World Athletics. Coe is also a member of the International Olympic Committee where he has been forced to navigate tricky geopolitical issues. These include the status of Russian athletes after the invasion of Ukraine and China's Covid-stricken Winter Olympics.
