Sayuri Shirai's Biography

Sayuri Shirai is Professor of Economics under Keio University’s Faculty of Policy Management. She is Advisor for Sustainable Policies at the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) and to both the Nomura Research Center for Sustainability and the Nissin Oillio Group.

From 2020-2021, Sayuri Shirai was a senior advisor to London-based EOS at Federated Hermes, which provides ESG-related stewardship services on firms and public policy. Prior to that, she was an ADBI visiting fellow from 2016-2020, a member of the Policy Board of the Bank of Japan from 2011-2016, taught at Sciences Po in Paris from 2007–2008, and served as an economist at the International Monetary Fund from 1993-1998.

Sayuri Shirai has published extensively on topics such as central bank digital currency, monetary policy, global finance, and ESG investment. She is also a contributing writer to the Japan Times and a frequent Japanese and international media commentator on Japan’s economy and global monetary policies. She has been featured on leading media platforms such as Nikkei Digital Think! Platform Expert, Bloomberg and CNBC.

Highly regarded for her thought leadership, Shirai has presented to the Bank for International Settlements, Glasgow Financial Alliance, Bank of Japan, ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office to name a few. She also participates in panel discussions at numerous international conference seminars around the world and conducts active discussions with central banks, governments, investors, financial institutions, and scholars.

Shirai is a member of the World Economic Forum External Network on Future of Long-Term Investing, Infrastructure and Development; New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO); Scientific Board of the Scientific Journal of Narodowy Bank Polski, and the National Bank of Poland. She is a mentor to Asia Pacific Women in Leadership (APWiL).

For her significant achievements in research and educational practice, Sayuri Shirai was awarded the Gijuku Prize in 2022. She holds a PhD in economics from Columbia University.
