Rupert Mitchell's Biography

Rupert Mitchell believes China’s EV revolution is unstoppable. Working in the region since 1999, he saw China go hard and early into new automotive technologies. Mitchell believes the country will reap the benefit of this strategic pivot.

Before leading WM Motor in Shanghai, Mitchell was an investment banker. He began his career at ING Barings (formerly Barings) in 1994, training in UK M&A before joining the London-based Emerging Markets Corporate Finance team. He joined ING Barings’ Asia-Pacific Equity Capital Markets team in Hong Kong in 1999.

Mitchell joined Salomon Smith Barney (later Citi) in 2000, running the bank’s equity-linked capital markets effort in the region, with additional generalist ECM coverage responsibilities for Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan. He returned to London in 2003 to join the bank’s ECM Structured Solutions (equity-linked capital markets and corporate derivatives) in Europe. He was promoted to Managing Director at Citi in 2006.

In 2007 Mitchell joined Jefferies in London as head of EMEA capital markets, where he was responsible for the group’s establishment and a member of the regional investment bank’s senior leadership team.

Rupert Mitchell returned to Hong Kong and Citi in 2010 as Head of Asia Pacific ECM Syndicate, overseeing the execution, primary distribution and underwriting of the bank’s ECM calendar in the region. He remained at Citigroup for another four years before joining Goldman Sachs as co-head of the bank’s ECM Syndicate in Hong Kong.

After leaving Goldman in 2017, Mitchell served as CEO of View from The Peak, an independent research business providing macro/thematic research for institutional investors.

In 2018 Mitchell transitioned into the automotive industry, spending 3 years as Chief Strategy Officer for Shanghai-headquartered electric vehicle start-up, WM Motor Technology. Whilst at WM, he was responsible for strategic financing, investments and international expansion into strategic markets in EMEA and elsewhere.
