Paul Morland's Biography

Dr Paul Morland writes and speaks about big demographic trends. Drawing on his experience as a banker and consultant, Morland explains the consequences for investor audiences.

Like Stephen J Shaw, Morland is concerned about the pernicious societial and economic consequences of the birth rate crisis. In No One Left, Morland looks at the disastrous implications for labour shortages, pensions and national debts. While the developed world may temporarily use immigration to delay its worst effects, many other countries face getting old before they get rich.

Morland argues we need to think more creatively about solutions. Countries like Hungary are actively introducing pro-natalist policies but these have reaped few dividends. Alongside financial incentives, governments need to address lack of space, cost of living and misogynistic cultures that still view childcare as women's work.

Alongside his advocacy on this issue, Morland also takes an analytical perspective in considering how demography has shaped the modern world and will mould its future. His 2022 book Tomorrow's People focuses on ten trends that will determine the next century. Human Tide (2019) looks at the effects of mass migrations on nations, continents and empires. It explains why the Arab Spring came and went, China's rapid rise and why the US voted for Donald Trump.

Morland also regularly writes in shorter form for the world’s leading newspapers and magazines including the Financial Times, the Sunday Times, The Telegraph, The Toronto Globe and Mail, Der Spiegel and the Jerusalem Post. He is a regular broadcaster on various media outlets.

Dr Paul Morland has been an associate research fellow at Birkbeck, University of London and a senior member at St Antony's College, Oxford. He lives in London, is married, has three children and is a dual British and German citizen.
