Michael Auslin's Biography

Michael Auslin is a counterweight to the hype about Asia's prospects in the 21st century. His 2017 book, The End of the Asian Century, argues there is nothing inevitable about Asia's rise. He highlights China's asset bubbles, territorial disputes in the South China Sea and poor demographics as reasons for pessimism.

Auslin is a celebrated academic in foreign policy circles. Formerly a history professor at Yale, he is now the inaugural Payson J. Treat Distinguished Research Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution. Auslin is also Advisor for Asia at the Halifax International Security Forum and a senior fellow at Philadelphia’s Foreign Policy Research Institute.

The End of the Asian Century is his most popular book for a general audience. But Auslin is also the author of academic titles: Negotiating with Imperialism and Pacific Cosmopolitans. He writes in shorter form for media outlets like the Financial TimesForeign AffairsForeign PolicyThe Spectator and The Wall Street Journal, where he is a regular contributor. He also hosts the popular Pacific Century podcast which features guests like Larry Summers, Frank Dikotter and Cindy Yu.

Auslin was elected a fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2018 and serves as a director of the American Ditchley Foundation and vice-chairman of the Wilton Park USA Foundation. He was named a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, a Fulbright Scholar, and a German Marshall Fund Marshall Memorial Fellow, among other honours.

Michael Auslin is a popular speaker on US foreign policy in Asia and strategic alliances like the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue and AUKUS. He advises governments and corporations on geopolitical risk.
