Maurice Obstfeld's Biography

 Maurice Obstfeld is the C. Fred Bergsten Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and the Class of 1958 Professor of Economics Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley.

Before joining the economics department at Berkeley, Obstfeld held faculty appointments at Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a visiting appointment at Harvard.

From 2015 to 2018, he was also acting Economic Counsellor and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund. Whilst there, Obstfeld stepped up the Fund's contribution to policy debate by disentangling complex economic issues through persuasive cases backed by comprehensive research. As a versatile economic thinker, Obstfeld made global forecasts and provided strategic insights and perspectives on a range of issues critical to the macroeconomic landscape.

Between 2014 and 2015, he was a Member of President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers. Being a leading part of a team made up of some of the world's top practitioners within economic policy, he provided the former US president with advice and analysis on issues ranging from trade agreements to financial regulation and energy policy.

The co-author of three leading textbooks on international economics, "International Economics" with Paul Krugman and Marc Melitz, "Foundations of International Macroeconomics" with Kenneth Rogoff and "Global Capital Markets" with Alan M. Taylor, Maurice Obstfeld is the 40th most widely cited academic economist in the world.

Obstfeld's specialty is in assessing the health of the global economy and the workings of our international financial system. He is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a distinguished fellow in the Centre for Economic Policy Research. In 2023, he was further honoured as a distinguished fellow of the American Economic Association.

Maurice Obstfeld received his PhD in economics from MIT after attending the University of Pennsylvania and King’s College, Cambridge University.
