Liz Truss's Biography

Liz Truss entered Downing Street with a radical plan to shake the United Kingdom out of its economic stasis. But her tenure got off to an inauspicious start when the country's longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, died just days after she entered office. After leading the nation in mourning, Truss ultimately lost her battle with the civil service and powerful NGOs as she tried to enact pro-market reforms.

Truss continues to be an influential figure in the Conservative Party, serving as a backbencher and MP for South West Norfolk. She is also a global activist for limited government, low taxes and freedom. Truss is the author of bestselling book, 10 Years to Save the West, which argues centre-right parties have to fight harder to dismantle embedded left-wing orthodoxies.

political career

Truss was appointed Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade following the Brexit vote in 2016. There, she established the UK’s first independent tariff regime in more than 40 years as the country once again took its own seat at the World Trade Organisation. Truss signed dozens of key trade deals with important partners such as Japan, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, kicked off negotiations with the US, and submitted the UK’s application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership.

In September 2021 Truss was appointed Foreign Secretary where she acted as a galvanising force for Global Britain, building relationships with allies around the world. She secured the release of British national Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe from an Iranian jail after nearly six years in captivity. Meanwhile, with a responsibility for post-Brexit relations with the European Union, Truss also introduced the legislation to fix the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Truss further pursued a bolder foreign policy, branding Putin’s regime "an international pariah" when summoning Russia’s Ambassador to the Foreign Office. She swiftly became a leading figure within the international alliance for supporting Ukraine and its people in their hour of need. This included ensuring that the UK was the first country in Europe to send weapons to the Ukrainian armed forces.

Post downing Street

Liz Truss resigned as Prime Minister in October 2022, recognising her agenda had been thwarted. But she remains committed to promoting conservative principles at home and abroad. In the former capacity, she is a vocal supporter of PopCon, a group committed to tackling the statist establishment consensus. Truss is also behind a bill to change the legal definition of sex to "biological" and bar trans women from female-only spaces.

Internationally, Truss has spoken at events like CPAC and the Future of Europe Forum as she seeks to build a global coalition around free-markets and anti-wokeism.
