Jeffrey Funk's Biography

Jeffrey Funk is a welcome counterweight to the AI-mania. He believes the potential of LLMs, like OpenAI's ChatGPT, is overhyped. Funk says we have been here before and points to an AI hype cycle where disappointment always follows enthusiasm.

But Funk is far from a luddite. He is a passionate technologist and was one of the first to recognise the potential for smart phones during the late 1990s in Japan. Then a professor at Kobe and Hitotsubashi universities, he worked with several western companies to help them implement phones and services. He also advised mobile service providers to focus on apps long before the iPhone was released in 2007. His research earned him the NTT DoCoMo mobile science award in 2004.

In 2007 Jeffrey Funk joined the National University of Singapore where he taught a unique course on the economics of new technologies. He took a more sceptical standpoint than his peers, becoming an early critic of today’s startups and venture capitalists. Funk criticises the loss-making businesses that comprise today’s startup bubble. He believes a different approach could have led to quicker profitability in industries like ride-sharing.

Jeffrey Funk offers a contrarian viewpoint on startups and new technologies today through his writing, speaking and prominent LinkedIn presence. He has been the keynote speaker at events like BrainBar, George Gilder’s COSM, Bank to the Future, WoW AI, and many others.

Funk contends that startups are far less profitable and technologies are growing slower than they did decades ago. He believes that the best way to predict the future of technologies is to look for and analyse killer applications. If you can’t find them, and he argues it's hard to do so for AI, then the technology will fall away.

Jeffrey Funk's first book will be released in 2024: Unicorns, Hype and Bubbles: A Guide to Spotting, Avoiding, and Exploiting Investment Bubbles in Tech.
