David Robson's Biography

David Robson focuses on the power of mindset. Its more malleable than we often think. And it can tranform our lives, strengthening our stress resilience, social relationships and enhancing longevity.

A Cambridge University mathematics graduate, David Robson's career began as a features editor at New Scientist, followed by a senior science role with the BBC. He regularly contributes to the Guardian, the Observer, the Wall Street Journal, the Times, the Atlantic, and many other major international outlets. He has won awards from the Association of British Science Writers and the UK Medical Journalists’ Association, particularly for his work on misinformation and risk communication during the COVID pandemic. In 2022, Robson was a finalist for the Best British Science Journalist of the Year Award.

Robson’s first book, The Intelligence Trap, examines common cognitive errors that result in foolish decisions and introduces “evidence-based wisdom.” His second book, The Expectation Effect, explores how our mindsets influence health, productivity and longevity. It was a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week and a Financial Times Book of the Year. Robson's latest book, The Laws of Connection, published in June 2024, addresses psychological barriers that limit our personal and professional relationships and offers strategies to build a stronger social network.

In his writing and talks, Robson combines cutting-edge science with philosophy, culture and practical advice. He explores concepts like the "liking gap" — our tendency to underestimate how much others enjoy our company — and provides tips for building social confidence and engaging in deeper conversations. He also discusses ambivalent relationships, constructive disagreement and the role of social media in loneliness.

David Robson’s work also tackles broader issues in science, such as outdated scientific practices, the replicability crisis in behavioural science and the importance of intellectual humility. He frequently appears on on high-impact podcasts including CNN’s Chasing Life, Modern Wisdom, and The Art of Charm. He has spoken at TEDx, the World Bank Group, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, UK government departments and multinational corporations across various sectors.
