Yukio Hatoyama

Dr Yukio Hatoyama served as Prime Minister of Japan from 2009 to 2010 and was the first Prime Minister from the modern Democratic Party of Japan. A Stanford-trained engineer, he is an advocate for regional cooperation, sustainable development, and climate action.

Yukio Hatoyama served as Prime Minister of Japan from 16 September 2009 to 2 June 2010, becoming the first Prime Minister from the modern Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ). First elected to the House of Representatives in 1986, he went on to serve as President of the DPJ, Japan’s principal opposition party at the time, from May 2009 before leading the party to a historic electoral victory.

During his tenure as Prime Minister, Dr Hatoyama championed a vision of a more balanced and Asia-focused foreign policy while maintaining Japan’s alliance with the United States. He sought to strengthen relations with neighboring East Asian countries, promote regional economic integration, and advance the establishment of a free trade area in Asia. His administration also proposed the development of Tokyo’s Haneda Airport as a 24-hour international aviation hub to enhance regional connectivity.

A strong advocate for environmental sustainability, Dr Hatoyama announced one of the world’s most ambitious climate commitments at the time, pledging to reduce Japan’s greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2020 compared with 1990 levels. His leadership on climate policy was widely recognised internationally and reinforced Japan’s commitment to global climate action.

Before entering politics, Dr Hatoyama pursued an academic career in engineering. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1969 and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University in 1976. He subsequently served as an Assistant Professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology (1976-1981) and as an Associate Professor at Senshu University (1981-1984), where he taught and conducted research before embarking on his political career.
