Yann LeCun

Yann LeCun is one of the figures who defined modern AI and one of the few willing to question its current path.

Yann LeCun is widely recognised as one of the pioneers of modern artificial intelligence. His early work on convolutional neural networks laid the foundations for today’s deep learning systems. In 2018, he shared the ACM Turing Award with Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio — a moment that brought deep learning to the centre of modern computing.

His influence, however, extends well beyond technical breakthroughs. Over the years, LeCun has moved between academia and industry with unusual ease. He helped deploy handwriting recognition systems at AT&T Bell Laboratories, teaches and mentors at New York University, and founded the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) lab at Meta, where he helped shape the direction of large-scale AI research.

Now, as Executive Chairman of AMI Labs, he is taking a different path from much of the industry. While others focus on scaling large language models, LeCun argues this alone will not lead to human-level intelligence. Instead, his work centres on what he calls “advanced machine intelligence”: systems that learn from the physical world, build internal models, and develop the ability to reason and plan.

Rather than taking a contrarian stance for effect, this reflects a long-held view. In his thinking, intelligence comes from understanding the world, not just processing language. Today’s systems remain powerful but incomplete. They are strong at pattern recognition, yet still limited in reasoning. Bridging that gap will require a shift in approach.

Underlying his work is a commitment to open research and scientific rigour. LeCun has consistently argued that AI should not sit in the hands of a few private actors, while remaining pragmatic about how it is used in practice. Technology, in his view, will always be shaped by the societies that adopt it. The role of the scientist is to build and explain.

In a fast-moving field, Yann LeCun remains a steady and independent voice.
