Yanis Varoufakis

Yanis Varoufakis is a leading critic of the economic establishment. He was the former Finance Minister of Greece, and is a professor, bestselling author, and current chair of the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025.

Yanis Varoufakis is a Greek economist whose work has consistently anticipated the fault lines of the global economy.

Long before the global financial crisis exposed the fragility of the eurozone, he argued that Europe’s monetary union was structurally incomplete. When Greece’s economy imploded in 2015, he was appointed finance minister and found himself negotiating at the epicentre of the sovereign debt crisis.

Originally trained as a mathematician, Varoufakis approaches economics as a dynamic system shaped by incentives, institutions and power. His intellectual trajectory has been defined by a willingness to challenge the orthodoxies of his own discipline. In his book The Global Minotaur, he argued that the post-1970s world economy depended on a singular imbalance: the United States acting as the absorber of global exports while Wall Street recycled global surpluses through an expanding financial sector. The 2008 crash, in his view, was not an accident but the inevitable breakdown of that arrangement.

In the years since, his focus has shifted to the transformation of capitalism itself. In Technofeudalism, he contends that digital platforms have created a new economic order in which traditional markets are increasingly replaced by privately owned digital domains. These platforms do not merely facilitate exchange; they extract rents, shape behaviour and concentrate power at a scale that rivals states. What he terms “cloud capital” — the algorithmic infrastructure embedded in platforms, data centres and devices — has altered the relationship between labour, capital and consumption. Under this model, value is not only produced through wage labour but also through the unpaid digital activity of users, reshaping profit, competition and demand in ways that conventional economic theory struggles to capture.

Varoufakis has been a sharp critic of the post-2008 policy response. He warned that quantitative easing and prolonged ultra-low interest rates would inflate asset prices, intensify inequality and accelerate corporate concentration, particularly in the technology sector. Rather than restoring productive investment, he argues, monetary expansion fuelled a structural shift toward platform dominance and speculative capital allocation. In parallel, he has framed the emerging US–China rivalry not simply as a trade dispute but as a contest over digital infrastructure, currency architecture and technological sovereignty. This struggle will define capital flows, industrial policy and regulatory regimes for decades to come.

Yanis Varoufakis remains politically active as co-founder of Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25), a transnational initiative advocating democratic reform within the European Union. He is the author of several international bestsellers, including Adults in the Room, later adapted for film by Costa-Gavras, which chronicles his experience during the Greek negotiations and offers a rare insider’s account of European crisis management.
