Tom Holland

Tom Holland is a major force in public history. His work bridges ancient and modern worlds, and reminds us that history is not just about the past but about who we are today.

Tom Holland is one of the most influential and widely read historians of our time. As an award-winning author, broadcaster, and podcaster, he has brought the ancient world to life for millions.

Holland’s expertise spans from the fall of the Roman Republic to the rise of Islam and the profound influence of Christianity on Western civilization. His first book, Rubicon, won the Hessell-Tiltman Prize for History and was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize. His later works, such as Dominion, challenge readers to rethink the legacy of Christian values in modern Western thought, while Pax provides the definitive account of Rome at the height of its power.

Tom Holland has adapted classical works by Herodotus, Homer, and Thucydides for BBC Radio. His translation of Herodotus’ Histories for Penguin Classics has been widely praised. As a presenter, he has hosted BBC Radio 4’s Making History and produced television documentaries on subjects ranging from ISIS to dinosaurs. His work earned him the Classical Association Prize in 2007 for his contribution to promoting classical studies.

However, it is as co-host of The Rest is History, alongside Dominic Sandbrook, that Holland has found a new level of influence. The podcast consistently ranks among the most popular history podcasts worldwide, drawing in listeners with its engaging storytelling, deep research, and humour. Its live events, including sold-out shows at the Royal Albert Hall, highlight the widespread appeal of his approach to history.

Holland argues that too much modern history ignores the deeply held beliefs of the past—whether religious, political, or cultural—and he strives to restore those perspectives in his writing. His translations and adaptations ensure that the voices of the past remain vivid and accessible to new generations.

A passionate cricket player, he is a member of the Authors XI cricket team, alongside other notable writers. He also serves as Chair of the British Library’s PLR Advisory Committee and has been an outspoken commentator on the role of history in contemporary debates.
