Thomas Schieffer

Few diplomats have played a larger role in strengthening America’s relationships with key Indo-Pacific allies than Thomas Schieffer. Across nearly a decade as US Ambassador to Australia and Japan, he helped deepen security cooperation, expand economic ties and reinforce partnerships that continue to shape the region today.

As US Ambassador to Japan from 2005 to 2009 and Ambassador to Australia from 2001 to 2005, J. Thomas Schieffer played a central role in advancing two of America’s most important strategic alliances.

His diplomatic career coincided with a period of significant geopolitical change, demanding close cooperation on regional security, trade and international affairs. In Australia, he helped deepen counterterrorism cooperation, supported reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq, and contributed to the Australia–US Free Trade Agreement. While in Japan, he strengthened the US-Japan alliance, expanded economic ties and negotiated the most significant realignment of US forces since the 1960 Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security.

Schieffer’s career demonstrates that lasting partnerships rely on trust, steady leadership and shared interests. While governments and global priorities change, enduring relationships remain the foundation of international cooperation.

Following his diplomatic service, Thomas Schieffer founded Envoy International LLC, where he advises companies with international interests, particularly across the Pacific. He helps organisations navigate commercial opportunities alongside the geopolitical realities shaping today’s business environment.

Before entering diplomacy, Schieffer served as President of the Texas Rangers Baseball Club. He oversaw the club’s daily operations and led the development of The Ballpark in Arlington after its acquisition in 1989. Earlier, he served three terms in the Texas House of Representatives, building a foundation in public service that later shaped his diplomatic career.

Schieffer has received some of the highest civilian honours from the US, Australia and Japan. Australia awarded him the Order of Australia in 2006 for strengthening the bilateral alliance. Japan honoured him with the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun in 2013. The US Department of Defense presented him with its Distinguished Public Service Award, while several intelligence agencies and the FBI also recognised his contributions. He joined the American Academy of Diplomacy in 2016 and entered the Texas Rangers Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.
