Shirley Meng

Shirley Meng speaks candidly about the limits of technology without policy alignment, the need for Earth-abundant materials, and the risks of siloed innovation in a geopolitically fragmented world. She believes energy storage is the strategic foundation for economic resilience, national security, and climate stability.

Y. Shirley Meng is one of the world’s most influential architects of energy transition.

A Liew Family Professor in Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago, Meng operates at the intersection of deep science, industrial reality, and climate urgency. She is also Chief Scientist of the Argonne Collaborative Center for Energy Storage Science and Director of the US Energy Storage Research Alliance (ESRA). A national innovation hub tasked with making energy storage safer, cheaper, more abundant, and deployable at terawatt scale.

Shirley Meng’s lab pioneered a research model that fuses first-principles computation with advanced real-time characterisation using electron, neutron, and photon sources. Her discoveries extended lithium-metal battery lifetimes from a few hundred cycles to more than a thousand. This opened new pathways for electric vehicles, aviation, and grid storage. Her team also uncovered why lithium batteries fail and described themselves as “doctors for batteries.” That insight led to a spin-out founded by her students called, South 8 Technologies, whose extreme-temperature batteries were named one of TIME’s Best Inventions.

Equally significant is her leadership on materials strategy. While much of the world frames battery innovation as “lithium versus alternatives,” Meng argues for portfolio thinking. Her lab’s breakthrough work on sodium-based solid-state batteries—using abundant, low-cost materials that perform even in sub-zero conditions—offers a credible path toward diversified gigafactories capable of producing multiple chemistries on the same line. For executives navigating supply-chain risk, geopolitical constraint, and decarbonisation targets, Shirley Meng provides industrial foresight.

Shirley Meng has authored more than 320 peer-reviewed papers, holds 20 patents, served a decade on the Electrochemical Society’s battery division leadership, and was Editor-in-Chief of MRS Energy & Sustainability, shaping how the field links science to societal and economic impact. Her honors include the Faraday Medal, International Battery Association Research Award, and election as Fellow of ECS, MRS, and AAAS.
