Sasha Luccioni is a leading scientist at the intersection of artificial intelligence, ethics, and sustainability, with a PhD in AI and over a decade of research and industry experience. Her work centers on quantifying the environmental impact of AI technologies and advancing sustainable practices in machine learning development.
She serves as Climate Lead at Hugging Face, a global startup driving responsible open-source AI, where she leads research, consulting, and capacity-building initiatives to enhance the sustainability of AI systems. Luccioni is also a founding member of Climate Change AI (CCAI) and a board member of Women in Machine Learning (WiML).
Luccioni began her career at Nuance Communications in 2017, applying natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) techniques to improve conversational agents. She then joined Morgan Stanley’s AI/ML Center of Excellence in 2018, focusing on explainable AI and decision-making systems. In 2019, she became a postdoctoral researcher at Université de Montréal and Mila, collaborating with Yoshua Bengio on This Climate Does Not Exist, a project using generative adversarial networks to visualize the impacts of climate change. During this period, she also contributed to integrating fairness and accountability into machine learning education at Mila.
In 2021, Luccioni briefly worked with United Nations Global Pulse, developing tools to monitor COVID-19 misinformation. Later that year, she joined Hugging Face as a research scientist, where she quantifies the carbon footprint of AI systems, co-chairs the carbon working group in the BigScience project, and promotes responsible machine learning practices. She is a co-creator of CodeCarbon, an open-source tool that estimates the carbon emissions associated with training and operating machine learning models.
Luccioni’s contributions to sustainable AI have been recognised by TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in AI and Business Insider’s 2024 AI Power List.
