Richard Harris

Richard Harris has spent much of the past half-century watching Asia move from the margins of global finance to its centre. Investor, broadcaster and financial expert witness, he has built a career interpreting the political, economic and market forces shaping the region long before they became mainstream concerns.

Long before Asia became central to the global economy, Richard Harris was building investment businesses across the region and helping shape the modern Asian asset management industry.

Over the years, he has held senior investment roles at institutions including JP Morgan Asset Management, Citi and BNY Mellon. Alongside those positions, he helped launch and grow several investment ventures across Asia. He has managed capital across multiple asset classes and advised sovereign institutions, pension funds, family offices and private investors during periods of major economic change.

In 2008, Harris founded Port Shelter Investment Management, a firm specialising in investment strategy, financial analysis and advisory work. He later expanded the business into financial expert witness services. Today, he ranks among Asia’s leading financial expert witnesses. Courts and regulators across Hong Kong, Singapore and other jurisdictions have sought his opinion on investment disputes, financial risk and market conduct.

Alongside his investment career, Harris became a recognised commentator on markets and geopolitical change. Having lived in Asia for more than 50 years, he has spent decades analysing China’s economic rise and the region’s shifting balance of power. He coined the term “Li-onomics” to describe the policies of former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. He also warned early about the emergence of an AI-driven market bubble.

More recently, Harris explored how investors interpret uncertainty and make decisions under pressure. His doctoral research at Cranfield University focused on “Narrative Finance”. The research examined how stories, perception and human judgement shape investment decisions. The topic has become increasingly relevant in today’s sentiment-driven markets.

Harris writes regularly for the Financial Times, South China Morning Post and China Daily. In addition, he appears frequently on Bloomberg, CNBC and the BBC to discuss markets, China and global risk. He also hosted business programmes for RTHK, including the long-running finance show Money Talk.

Today, Richard Harris remains one of Asia’s most experienced voices on investment, geopolitical risk and global economic change.
