Paul Holden

One of the world’s leading investigative voices, Paul Holden turns sprawling corruption networks and political scandals into sharp insights about power, influence and institutional risk.
Speaker Categories

Originally from Johannesburg, Paul Holden investigates the hidden systems that shape modern power. For more than a decade, he has exposed grand corruption, state capture and global money laundering networks. His work goes beyond headlines and political theatre. Instead, he reveals how institutions are manipulated from the inside — and what that means for business, governance and public trust.

Today, Holden serves as Director of Investigations at Shadow World Investigations. There, he leads complex investigations into corruption, financial crime and corporate complicity. Most notably, he helped expose the vast State Capture project linked to the Gupta family in South Africa. His investigations traced how multinational companies, offshore structures and international banking channels moved billions across borders.

In parallel, Holden delivered extensive testimony before South Africa’s landmark Zondo Commission of Inquiry. He also submitted a 7,000-page forensic report mapping the financial architecture behind State Capture. The findings shaped major sections of the Commission’s final report. They also contributed to criminal investigations, regulatory action and the recovery of stolen assets.

Beyond investigations, Paul Holden has become one of the most compelling writers on corruption and political power today. He is a bestselling author and a Network Fellow at Harvard University’s Safra Center for Ethics. His work explores the global arms trade, political manipulation, media influence and institutional decline. His latest book, The Fraud, examines the machinery behind Keir Starmer’s rise within Britain’s Labour Party. The book unpacks how media strategy, influence networks and factional politics reshaped one of the UK’s most important political institutions.

Holden’s reporting and commentary regularly appear in major international outlets, including The Guardian, The Telegraph and Al Jazeera. Whether investigating corruption networks or political influence campaigns, he brings rare clarity to one defining question: how does power really operate when nobody thinks the public is watching?
