Pablo Hernández de Cos is a distinguished economist known for his expertise in monetary policy, financial stability, and economic strategy. Holding a PhD in Economics from the Complutense University, along with degrees in Economics and Business Administration from CUNEF and Law from UNED, Hernández de Cos embarked on his illustrious career in 1997 at the Bank of Spain. As a graduate entering the Research Service, he quickly made significant contributions within the Monetary and Financial Research and Economic Forecasting Departments.
Seven years later, his career took him to Frankfurt at the European Central Bank (ECB), where he advised the ECB’s executive board on critical economic policies. Returning to Spain in 2007, he became the head of the Economic Policy Analysis Division at the Bank of Spain, where his leadership was pivotal until his appointment as Director of Economics and Statistics in 2015.
During his tenure, he chaired the Eurosystem’s Public Finance Working Group, engaged actively in the EU’s Economic and Financial Committees, and lectured at both Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Instituto de Empresa (IE).
Appointed Governor of the Bank of Spain in 2018, Hernández de Cos excelled in enhancing the institution’s prestige post-financial crisis by reinforcing its independence and analytical rigor. Under his mandate, the Bank’s first strategic plan was developed, and an independent evaluation office was established. These successes earned him accolades from the economics and journalism community.
While serving as Governor, he was a key contributor to defining the Eurosystem’s monetary policy as a member of both the Governing Council and General Council of the ECB. In 2019, he was elected Chairman of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and led the Technical Advisory Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board. His leadership extended to international forums, including chairing the Center for Latin American Monetary Studies (Cemla).
With his gubernatorial term concluding in June 2024, Hernández de Cos continues to influence global economics. He now chairs the ESRB’s Technical Advisory Committee, lectures as a professor at IESE Business School, and serves as a non-resident fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and Bruegel. His expertise is further sought in reviewing the monetary policy strategy of the Central Bank of Canada.
A sought-after keynote and event speaker, Pablo Hernández de Cos offers invaluable insights into economic leadership, market dynamics, and regulatory frameworks, making him a compelling choice for discussions on the future of global finance and economics.
