Ooi Kee Beng is one of Southeast Asia’s most lucid voices on Malaysia’s political evolution, the region’s place in a shifting world order, and the language we use to describe power.

Born in 1955 (two years before Malaya’s independence), Ooi carries a living memory of colonial rule alongside the ambitions of the Merdeka generation. He began his career as a court reporter and sub-editor in Penang before spending 22 years at Ericsson in Sweden. There he ran machines and did quality control while pursuing academic research as a “hobby” that eventually grew into a PhD in Sinology. Along the way, Ooi Kee Beng became the first to translate The Art of War and other classical Chinese military texts directly into Swedish from Classical Chinese. Works that are still hugely popular today.

Ooi’s writing is shaped by influences as varied as Confucius, Taoism, Wittgenstein, and the political left of Scandinavia. A self-described “philosophical anarchist,” he challenges the intellectual laziness he sees in both establishment narratives and some activist movements. He insists that real change starts with reframing the discourse and has argued that terms like “multipolarity” risk keeping the Global South defined in opposition to the West rather than on its own terms. On stage or in writing, Ooi pushes audiences to interrogate the assumptions embedded in policy language and historical interpretation.

Ooi Kee Beng is the author of numerous books on Malaysian and Singaporean history and politics, including acclaimed biographies of figures such as Singapore’s founding finance minister Dr Goh Keng Swee. His biographical work is notable for situating political leaders within their broader historical and geopolitical contexts, rather than treating them as isolated personalities. Ooi’s books help readers see how individual agency intersects with structural forces and this perspective informs his wider analysis of Southeast Asia’s place in the world.
