Neil Shearing

Neil Shearing is Group Chief Economist at Capital Economics, a leading global provider of independent economic research. He leads a team of 70 economists based across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, overseeing the firm’s research agenda, product development, and client relationships. He also serves as a director of the company.

Prior to his current role, Shearing served as Chief Emerging Markets Economist at Capital Economics, where he earned multiple awards for forecast accuracy and helped establish the firm’s presence in New York. Earlier in his career, he worked at HM Treasury as an Economic Adviser, focusing on fiscal policy and global economic issues.

With two decades of experience as a macroeconomist in both the public and private sectors, Shearing is a recognised authority on the global economy and financial markets. He frequently presents to institutional audiences and appears in international media, including the Financial Times, television, and radio. Shearing is the author of The Fractured Age: How the Return of Geopolitics Will Splinter the Global Economy, due to be published in August 2025. The book explores the key risks and opportunities that will shape the global economy over the next decade.

He holds degrees in Economics from the University of York and the University of London. He is also an Associate Fellow in the Global Economy Programme at Chatham House.
