Michelle Thaller

Dr. Michelle Thaller is an astrophysicist, science communicator, and one of the most original minds in modern astronomy. She spent 27 years at NASA, retiring in 2024 as Assistant Director of Science Communication at Goddard Space Flight Center, the agency’s largest base.

Thaller grew up in Waukesha, Wisconsin, spending spare hours at observatories and natural history museums. From the moment she could talk, she was pointing at the sky. She trained at Harvard, then earned her PhD at Georgia State University studying binary stars. Massive suns locked in close orbit, their atmospheres colliding at unimaginable force.

At NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Thaller led public outreach for the Spitzer Space Telescope. That’s where her real career began. She watched the universe’s most astonishing discoveries fail to hold an audience and decided to fix that. Crucially, that communication instinct was always trained. As a student, she joined the debate team. Thaller learned early that science without persuasion goes nowhere.

Thaller’s leadership at NASA required bridging siloed teams across Earth science, astrophysics, planetary science, and heliophysics — disciplines that rarely spoke to each other. She built the bridges. She also authored and hosted major podcast and media series, appeared before audiences on six continents, lectured at the Royal Society of New Zealand, and delivered the 2024 Christmas Lecture at the University of Notre Dame. Everywhere she goes, audiences lean in.

As a speaker, Michelle Thaller offers something genuinely rare: a scientist who has spent decades making high-stakes decisions with incomplete, often invisible data and communicating those decisions to sceptical rooms. Her research demanded patience with what cannot yet be seen or measured. With a career that demanded adaptability over certainty, she followed questions and built one of the most remarkable careers in modern science.
