Masahiro Hara is the inventor of the QR code®, one of the world’s most widely adopted technologies for connecting the physical and digital worlds. Developed in 1994 while Hara was a lead engineer at DENSO WAVE, the QR code® has become a global standard, enabling billions of daily interactions across manufacturing, healthcare, retail, transportation, finance, logistics, and mobile payments.
After graduating from Hosei University with a degree in electrical engineering, Hara joined DENSO Corporation in 1980 before moving to DENSO WAVE, where he specialised in automatic identification technologies for the automotive industry. Tasked with improving the speed and capacity of conventional barcodes used in manufacturing, he led the development of the Quick Response (QR) Code, a two-dimensional code capable of storing significantly more information while remaining readable at high speed from any direction. Originally designed to improve production efficiency, the technology quickly found applications far beyond manufacturing.
A defining factor in the QR Code’s worldwide success was DENSO WAVE’s decision not to exercise its patent rights, allowing the technology to be adopted freely and encouraging innovation across industries. Today, the QR code® powers everything from contactless payments, digital ticketing, and supply chain management to healthcare, authentication, and consumer engagement, making it an indispensable part of everyday life around the world.
Hara’s groundbreaking work has earned international recognition, including the European Inventor Award – Popular Prize (2014), the US R&D 100 Award (2002), the Mobile Project Award Grand Prize (2004), the Japan Innovator Award – Outstanding Prize (2007), and inclusion in the Good Design Best 100 (2012). In 2023, he received Japan’s prestigious Imperial Award from the Japan Academy, and in 2025, was awarded the prestigious AIM Global Lifetime Achievement Award. AIM is the world’s leading authority on innovation standards for Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) technologies. Hara was also inducted into the Japan Automotive Hall of Fame in recognition of his enduring contributions to engineering and society.
