Marcus Ryu

Marcus Ryu is a veteran entrepreneur, investor, and startup advisor. He joined Battery Ventures as a partner in 2022, where he focuses on early- and growth-stage technology investments, particularly in vertical enterprise applications, fintech, and data services. He is currently involved in the firm’s investments in Coram, Descartes Systems Group, GenLogs, hyperexponential, LEEO, Liberate, and Maybern.

Prior to joining Battery Ventures, Ryu was the co-founder and CEO of Guidewire Software (NYSE: GWRE), a leading provider of cloud-based core system platforms for the global property and casualty insurance industry, supporting underwriting, policy administration, billing, and claims management. He co-founded Guidewire in 2001 and served as CEO until 2019. Ryu continues to serve as an independent director on the company’s board. Today, Guidewire generates over $1 billion in annual recurring revenue and has a market capitalisation of approximately $20 billion.

Earlier in his career, Ryu was an engagement manager at McKinsey & Company and served as vice president of strategy at Ariba.

He currently serves as an independent director of Checkr, Bloomreach, Bestow, and Guidewire, and advises several privately held technology companies. Previously, he served on the boards of MuleSoft, Opower, Clearwater Analytics, Cornerstone OnDemand, and Procore Technologies.

Ryu holds an A.B. with highest honors from Princeton University and a B.Phil. in philosophy from New College, Oxford at University of Oxford, which he attended as a Marshall Scholarship recipient.
