Lyle Morris is a leading expert on China’s security strategy and the shifting balance of power in the Indo-Pacific. He helps governments and institutions understand Beijing’s mindset and anticipate its next moves.

Morris is a Senior Fellow for Foreign Policy and National Security at the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis, where he focuses on Chinese foreign policy, military strategy, and maritime security. His work zeroes in on the real pressure points shaping regional stability from gray-zone tactics in the South China Sea to the long arc of US–China competition.

Before joining ASPI, Lyle Morris spent over a decade at the RAND Corporation, where he led high-impact research on Chinese military modernisation and Asia-Pacific security. From 2019 to 2021, he served in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as Country Director for China. There, he advised senior US defence leaders on relations with the People’s Liberation Army and Indo-Pacific security strategy — earning the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service.

Lyle Morris lived and studied in Beijing for four years, training in Mandarin at Tsinghua University and working across both the private and academic sectors. That experience continues to shape his nuanced understanding of how China links domestic pressures with global ambition.

Today, he also teaches at the Naval Postgraduate School, where he works with foreign military officers on maritime security and the evolving role of coast guards in Asia.

Across his career, Morris has spent more than two decades advising government and private sector clients. His writing has appeared in leading outlets including Naval War College Review, Asia Policy, The Diplomat, and The National Interest. Whether analysing China’s strategic worldview or the risks of miscalculation with the United States, his work is known for its clarity, realism, and policy relevance.
