Lydia Ko

She reached world number one before she turned eighteen. And then, in front of a global audience, she lost her way. The remarkable career of Dame Lydia Ko is a story about far more than golf.

There has never been a golfer quite like Lydia Ko.

Born in Seoul and raised in Auckland, Ko picked up a golf club at five years old. By fifteen, she was winning on the LPGA Tour as an amateur, a feat not achieved since 1967. By seventeen, Ko was the youngest player in history, to reach world number one.

After a stunning early career marked by two major championships and a world number one ranking, Ko hit a prolonged slump that played out publicly on the global stage. Rankings fell. Wins dried up. The prodigy who had made it look easy was visibly searching for her game. Yet what followed was one of sport’s most compelling comebacks. Built on hard-won self-awareness and a work ethic so relentless that her own coach struggled to slow her down.

Lydia Ko’s second chapter has been nothing short of remarkable. In 2024, Ko won Olympic gold in Paris, completing a bronze, silver and gold collection across three consecutive Games. It is a feat no golfer in history has achieved. Two weeks later, she claimed the AIG Women’s Open at the Old Course at St Andrews. That victory earned her the final point needed for induction into the LPGA Hall of Fame, making her its youngest ever member at just 27.

Shortly after, New Zealand appointed Ko a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, the female equivalent of a knighthood and one of the country’s highest civilian distinctions. She is the youngest person to receive that honour in the modern Commonwealth.

Today, Lydia Ko sits third in the world rankings and is chasing the Career Grand Slam before a retirement she has thoughtfully planned for her late twenties.

Off the course, Dame Lydia is articulate, grounded, and genuinely reflective. She speaks with rare honesty about performance, mental resilience, the pressure of expectation, and what it really takes to sustain excellence across the different phases of a career. Her story resonates far beyond sport and far beyond golf.
