Ken Chenault

Drawing on nearly four decades at American Express, Ken Chenault shares hard-won insights on leading through crisis, protecting trust in a global brand, and making decisions that hold up over time rather than headlines. He is particularly compelling on the human side of leadership: how to communicate when answers are incomplete and how to build credibility through transparency.

Ken Chenault is widely regarded as one of the most trusted leaders of modern American business. He spent 37 years at American Express, joining the company in 1981 and rising through the ranks to become Chairman and CEO in 2001. Over the next 17 years, Chenault led the company through moments of profound disruption: the aftermath of 9/11, the global financial crisis, rapid digital change, and shifting consumer expectations. Under his leadership, American Express strengthened its brand, built one of the world’s most successful loyalty programmes, and became known for putting customer trust and long-term value ahead of short-term gains. When he stepped down in 2018, Warren Buffett called him “the gold standard for corporate leadership.”

What distinguished Chenault’s tenure was his judgement. He became known for calm decision-making in uncertainty, honest communication with employees, and an insistence that leadership begins with people. Their wellbeing, confidence, and ability to adapt when circumstances change.

Today, Ken Chenault brings that experience into a different arena as Chairman and Managing Director of General Catalyst. He is also the co-founder of OneTen, a coalition of major employers committed to creating one million family-sustaining jobs for Black Americans without four-year degrees. The initiative reflects Chenault’s belief that business has both the reach and the obligation to widen access to opportunity.

Ken Chenault serves on the boards of Airbnb, Berkshire Hathaway, the Harvard Corporation, and several nonprofit and cultural institutions, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. His work sits at the intersection of business, civic leadership, and social trust. He enjoys advising leadership teams as they scale and helping them think through culture, governance, and the long view of growth.
