Kelsey Hightower

Kelsey Hightower is a self-taught engineer who rose from a small computer store south of Atlanta to become a Distinguished Engineer at Google Cloud, co-founder of KubeCon, and one of the defining evangelists of Kubernetes.

Kelsey Hightower is best known for making complex systems usable. As a former Distinguished Engineer at Google, he played a central role in bringing Kubernetes into the mainstream, and became one of the most recognisable voices in the cloud-native movement. At a time when Kubernetes was widely seen as difficult and opaque, he focused on explaining how it worked and why it mattered. His teaching, including Kubernetes the Hard Way, remains a go-to resource for engineers who want to understand systems properly.

Since leaving Google in 2023, Hightower has taken a more selective approach to his work. He describes himself as “retired, not tired”. In practice, that means advising founders, speaking at leading industry events, and spending more time observing how the field is changing. He is interested in how the wider system is evolving.

Much of his recent work focuses on the gap between building technology and building a business. He often points out that a successful open source project is not the same as a sustainable company. Founders, in his view, need to learn how to operate commercially without losing sight of what made their technology useful in the first place. He also speaks plainly about responsibility in open source. Companies benefit from it, but too few contribute back in a meaningful way.

Kelsey Hightower has also become a thoughtful voice on artificial intelligence. He frames AI as a tool that depends on how people choose to use it. He encouri ages a more deliberate approach. Understand what it does well, use it where it helps, and avoid relying on it blindly. For him, the real risk is in a loss of understanding. People using systems they no longer fully grasp.

As a speaker, Hightower talks about how engineers can stay relevant, why businesses succeed or fail, and how to navigate constant change without losing direction.
