Karen Kim

Karen Kim became CEO of a self-funded AI company at 30. She has since helped transform Human Managed from a data analytics start-up into an enterprise AI platform processing billions of events a day.

In 2018, while working at LinkedIn, Karen Kim began spending part of her week with Human Managed’s founder, Saleem Javed Mohamed Ismail.

He had an ambitious idea to build technology that could help organisations make decisions from an ever-growing mass of data. Kim was not an engineer but she knew customers, communication and the difference between a technology that works and one that people can actually use. When Human Managed won its first major platform contract with a regional bank in the Philippines, the company needed a CEO. Kim accepted the role. She was 30 years old.

That unlikely starting point became the foundation of her leadership style. Her early work focused heavily on positioning, messaging and simplifying the company’s proposition. She had to explain a technically complex business to decision-makers while learning the technology herself. Her answer was not to imitate an archetypal technology CEO, but to lean into what she already knew: service, observation, storytelling and design thinking.

The company’s proposition has evolved with her. Human Managed began with data visibility and analytics. It now builds cloud-native AI systems that connect intelligence with decisions and action. Its I.DE.A. framework was recently extended to include execution, creating an explicit chain from understanding a situation to planning, acting and recording what happened. The system is designed around modular AI agents, logged reasoning and traceable actions.

The scale of the problem is substantial. Human Managed says its platform processes billions of daily events, while one customer case reduced security-alert triage from roughly 30 minutes to under a minute. Kim’s thinking is equally concerned with the human side of automation. She argues that AI should not simply produce more information. It should understand context, support judgement and carry decisions into execution.

Born in Seoul, Karen Kim moved to Hong Kong at 11 without speaking English, then studied Politics at Cambridge. She subsequently spent more than a decade in customer-facing roles at Hays, British Telecom and LinkedIn.
