Joe Tsai

Joe Tsai is a founding member of the Alibaba Partnership and also serves on the board of Ant Group, an affiliate of Alibaba. He was Chief Financial Officer until 2013, Executive Vice Chairman until September 2023, and currently serves as Chairman of the Company.

Prior to joining Alibaba, Tsai was a private equity investor with Investor AB, the investment company of Sweden’s Wallenberg family, from 1995 to 1999. Earlier in his career, he served as General Counsel of Rosecliff, Inc., a New York-based management buyout firm, and as an associate attorney in the tax group at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP in New York.

Beyond his business leadership, Tsai is an active investor and operator in professional sports. He is the Governor of the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Chairman of Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment, which includes the Brooklyn Nets, Barclays Center, and the Long Island Nets of the NBA G League. He also owns the New York Liberty of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), as well as the San Diego Seals and Las Vegas Desert Dogs of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). His broader sports portfolio includes investments in the Premier Lacrosse League, Los Angeles FC of Major League Soccer, and multiple sports media and technology companies across North America, Europe, and Asia.

Through the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation, Tsai and his wife, Clara Wu Tsai, support initiatives in education, scientific research, criminal justice reform, economic mobility, the arts, and humanitarian relief, including COVID-19 response efforts. They are also founders of the Tsai Leadership Program at Yale Law School.

Tsai is admitted to practice law in the State of New York. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics and East Asian Studies from Yale College and a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School.
