Jimmy Wales is an Internet entrepreneur, wiki pioneer, and technology visionary, best known as the founder of Wikipedia, the world’s largest collaborative free-content encyclopedia, and the Wikimedia Foundation. He is also the co-founder of Wikia, a privately owned free web hosting service launched in 2004.

Wales launched Nupedia in March 2000, a free encyclopedia with a rigorous peer-review process aimed at producing content of professional quality. The addition of a wiki platform – a collection of web pages allowing anyone to contribute or edit content led to the creation of Wikipedia. Initially designed to serve as a collaborative tool for Nupedia content, Wikipedia’s rapid growth soon surpassed its predecessor, revolutionising the concept of user-driven knowledge creation.

Wales has consistently articulated his vision for Wikipedia, stating in a 2004 interview with Slashdot: “Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That’s what we’re doing.” The success of Wikipedia has helped define the Web 2.0 era, emphasising creativity, collaboration, and open access on the Internet.

In 2003, Wales founded the Wikimedia Foundation, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to fostering the growth and distribution of free, multilingual content. The Foundation oversees some of the largest collaboratively edited reference projects in the world, including Wikipedia, which ranks among the top five most visited websites globally. In 2004, Wales co-founded Wikia, Inc. with Angela Beesley, creating a platform hosting individual wikis on diverse subjects. He is also involved in the development of Search Wikia, a human-powered search engine guided by the open, community-driven principles underpinning Wikipedia and Wikia.

Wales serves as a Fellow of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School and sits on the boards of Socialtext and the nonprofit Creative Commons. He has received an honorary doctorate from Knox College and the Pioneer Award from the Electronic Frontier Foundation in 2006. He earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Auburn University and pursued graduate studies in finance at the University of Alabama and Indiana University, teaching at both institutions, and completing a Master’s degree.
