Jennifer Doudna

Jennifer Doudna is a pioneering scientist whose groundbreaking work on CRISPR-Cas9, a revolutionary genome-editing technology that enables precise modifications to the DNA of living cells, has transformed the fields of genetics, biotechnology, and biomedical research.

Jennifer Doudna is internationally recognised for her pioneering contributions to the development of CRISPR-Cas9 as a genome-editing technology, a breakthrough that has transformed molecular biology, genetics, and biomedical research. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Inventors, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is also a Foreign Member of the Royal Society and a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

In 2011, Doudna began a landmark collaboration with French microbiologist Emmanuelle Charpentier after meeting at a scientific conference in Puerto Rico. Combining their expertise in biochemistry, structural biology, and microbiology, they investigated how the CRISPR system enables bacteria to defend against viral infections. Together with researchers Martin Jinek and Krzysztof Chylinski, their teams discovered the mechanism by which the CRISPR-Cas9 system identifies and cuts viral DNA, paving the way for its adaptation as a powerful genome-engineering tool. Their seminal findings, published in Science in 2012, transformed the field of genetics and led to the award of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Doudna currently holds the Li Ka Shing Chancellor’s Chair and Professor in the Departments of Chemistry and Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. She is an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Senior Investigator at the Gladstone Institutes, and Founder of the Innovative Genomics Institute. She has also co-founded and advises several companies applying CRISPR technology to advance innovations in healthcare, biotechnology, and beyond.

Beyond her scientific achievements, Doudna is a leading voice in discussions on the ethical and societal implications of genome editing. She advocates for responsible innovation and the development of thoughtful policies to ensure the safe and equitable use of CRISPR technologies.
