Ho Kwon Ping

A former journalist and outspoken critic turned luxury hotelier, Ho Kwon Ping has built Banyan Tree Holdings into a global hospitality empire while continuously challenging conventional wisdom in business and leadership.

Few entrepreneurs embody the fusion of radical idealism and business acumen quite like Ho Kwon Ping.

His early years were marked by a rebellious streak that saw Ho detained for writing allegedly pro-leftist articles as a journalist for the Far Eastern Economic Review. He later embraced a different kind of revolution—one driven by design, sustainability, and the pursuit of lasting impact over quick profits.

In 1994, Ho Kwon Ping co-founded Banyan Tree with his wife, Claire Chiang, launching their first resort in Phuket, Thailand. From the outset, the brand set itself apart by blending eco-conscious luxury with a strong sense of place, pioneering a new wave of Asian hospitality. Today, Banyan Tree Holdings—part of the Banyan Group—boasts more than 80 hotels and resorts across 20+ countries.

MORE THAN JUST HOTELS

For Ho, hospitality is not just about buildings—it’s about storytelling. He describes his resorts as grand stages, where guests become the main characters in their own immersive experiences. Every Banyan Tree property is meticulously designed to evoke a sense of belonging, a philosophy that has cemented the brand as a leader in experiential travel.

Yet, Ho Kwon Ping’s success extends far beyond the luxury sector. He has played a key role in Singapore’s education and business landscapes, serving as the founding chairman of Singapore Management University (SMU) for 25 years and chairing The Singapore Summit, a high-profile platform for global thought leadership.

A RELUCTANT BUSINESSMAN

Despite his status as a hospitality titan, Ho never set out to be an entrepreneur. His independent nature and unwillingness to conform made him an unlikely—but ultimately highly effective—business leader. His leadership philosophy? Self-awareness over self-importance. He argues that true leadership requires selflessness, a trait he candidly admits he doesn’t possess in abundance. Yet, his ability to inspire, challenge, and provoke meaningful conversations has earned him deep respect beyond the business world.

BEYOND PROFITS

Unlike many entrepreneurs who sell at their peak, Ho famously turned down a $1.6 billion buyout offer in 2006, choosing instead to preserve and grow Banyan Tree’s legacy. His commitment to sustainability, long before it became a corporate buzzword, underscores a deeper belief in business as a force for good. Ho Kwon Ping’s writings and speeches, compiled in Asking Why and The Ocean in a Drop, offer a rare glimpse into his mind—one that constantly questions the status quo. His latest biography, Behind The Banyan, further unpacks his journey from dissenter to business leader, reflecting on leadership, resilience, and Singapore’s future.
