Hao Xu

Dr Hao Xu is Vice President of Sustainable Social Value at Tencent and Head of Tencent’s Carbon Neutrality Lab, where he leads the company’s global carbon neutrality strategy and climate innovation initiatives. He is responsible for advancing Tencent’s decarbonisation agenda, leveraging digital technologies to accelerate emissions reduction, supporting the development of low-carbon solutions, and encouraging sustainable lifestyles among consumers.

Under Xu’s leadership, Tencent is driving efforts across key areas including data center energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, and the advancement of next-generation climate technologies. Recognising the need to accelerate innovation beyond operational improvements, Tencent launched the CarbonX Program in partnership with industry leaders, investors, and innovators to identify, support, and scale transformative climate solutions that can accelerate the transition to a low-carbon world.

Prior to joining Tencent, Xu was a Partner at McKinsey & Company, where he led the firm’s sustainability practice across Greater China, Southeast Asia, and India. He has also contributed to global sustainability initiatives through collaborations with public institutions, including the World Economic Forum and the UK government.

Xu holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Biology from Nanjing University, a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of Nottingham, and a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Sheffield.
