Born and bred in wild Patagonia, Gus Balbontin never allowed his small town and humble beginnings get in the way of his big dreams. Driven by curiosity, a bold spirit, and an early desire to explore the world, he moved to Australia at just 17 years old. By 22, Balbontin had already left university, hitchhiked across South America, launched his first business, and secured a dream role at Lonely Planet.
Over the following years, Balbontin was leading the company globally, working closely with industry giants like Google X, Amazon, and Nokia and Amazon on the latest technology, creative cultures and high performing teams. Seeking a change from corporate life, he hung up his boots as the Executive Director and CTO of Lonely Planet and decided to move back to his entrepreneurial roots, becoming an investor, founder and mentor across the start-up ecosystem in Melbourne.
Today, Balbontin is an active figure in Melbourne’s innovation ecosystem. He serves as Director at Neu21, helping large organisations navigate transformation and complexity, and is a General Partner at BluescopeX, the corporate venture fund of BlueScope. Over the past three years, he has delivered keynotes and workshops to audiences ranging from intimate groups of 10 in regional Australia and New Zealand, to stadium crowds of 10,000 across North America, Europe, South America, and Asia.
Looking ahead, Balbontin is focused on transforming education through his long-term initiative, the Unrealistic Foundation, aiming to redefine how learning can unlock human potential.
