Long before AI became Silicon Valley’s ultimate prize, Fei-Fei Li recognised that intelligence is inseparable from its social, political, and human context.

A Princeton-trained physicist with a Caltech PhD in electrical engineering, Li made her most famous mark with a dataset, ImageNet. Launched in 2009, it helped trigger the deep learning revolution, forcing AI to confront the complexity of visual perception at scale. This completely changed how the industry compete, collaborate, and accelerate.

As Director of Stanford’s AI Lab and now as Co-Director of the Human-Centered AI Institute, Fei-Fei Li is a sharp critic of AI’s extractive tendencies and a vocal advocate for aligning technological progress with democratic values. Her work spanning computer vision, robotics, healthcare, and ambient intelligence has shaped not only research agendas but how policymakers imagine AI’s role in society. From testifying before Congress to advising the UN, Li’s influence operates at the intersection of science and governance.

A former VP at Google Cloud and a past board director at Twitter, Fei-Fei Li also understands firsthand how AI’s breakthroughs get commodified, how talent flows into private capital, and how public institutions often struggle to keep pace. Her new venture, World Labs, now valued at over $1 billion, reflects a calculated response to these dynamics. The company hopes to build AI rooted in spatial intelligence. A deeper cognition tied to the physical, embodied world. It is, in her view, a necessary step toward any credible vision of general intelligence.

Li’s 2023 memoir, The Worlds I See, chronicles a woman immigrant scientist moving through, and sometimes against, the currents of a male-dominated, capital-driven industry. In her commentaries, she always returns to a central question: what kind of intelligence are we building, and for whom? In an era when AI is often framed as inevitable, Fei-Fei Li insists it is still a choice. A profoundly human one, shaped by the values we embed in code, institutions, and ourselves.
