Edward Frenkel is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, and the recipient of the Hermann Weyl Prize in mathematical physics. He previously served on the faculty at Harvard University.
Frenkel’s research lies at the intersection of mathematics and quantum physics, with a primary focus on the Langlands Program, which he has described as a “Grand Unified Theory of mathematics.” He is the author of more than 100 scholarly articles, and has lectured extensively around the world. His educational YouTube videos have attracted millions of views.
Frankel’s book, Love and Math presents mathematics as a creative and aesthetic pursuit and reveals a side of the subject rarely seen by the general public. A New York Times bestseller, the book won the Euler Book Prize from the Mathematical Association of America, was named one of the Best Books of the Year by Amazon and iBooks, and has been published in 20 languages, achieving bestseller status in several countries.
Frenkel has also written articles for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Slate, The Atlantic, Huffington Post, Scientific American, and other publications. He co-produced and starred in the short film Rites of Love and Math and recently launched a new YouTube series, AfterMath, a “video-book” sequel to Love and Math. In the spirit of Pythagoras, Frenkel also explores the connection between mathematics and music, performing under the name DJ Moonstein.
Frenkel earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Harvard University in 1991, after an accelerated year of graduate study, following an undergraduate degree in applied mathematics from Gubkin University of Oil and Gas in Russia.
