Dario Amodei is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Anthropic, an artificial intelligence safety and research company dedicated to building reliable, steerable, interpretable, and safe AI systems.

Anthropic was founded in 2021 with six former OpenAI colleagues, including his sister Daniela Amodei, who serves as the company’s president. The company has grown into one of the most closely watched AI firms globally and has raised significant funding from major strategic investors. As CEO, Amodei guides Anthropic’s strategic vision at the intersection of technological innovation and ethical responsibility, emphasising AI safety, robustness, and broad societal benefit. Under his leadership, Anthropic has released the Claude family of AI models, designed around safety-centric research principles.

Before Anthropic, Amodei was Vice President of Research at OpenAI, where he helped shape the organisation’s research priorities and led key teams responsible for the development of influential large language models such as GPT-2 and GPT-3. He is also co-credited with work on reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), a foundational technique for aligning AI systems with human preferences. Earlier in his career, Amodei worked as a Senior Research Scientist at Google Brain and has held research roles at Baidu and Stanford University, contributing to deep learning and AI safety research.

Amodei’s academic background is rooted in physics and biophysics. He began undergraduate studies at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and later transferred to Stanford University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics. He then completed a PhD in Biophysics at Princeton University, focusing on computational neuroscience and electrophysiology of neural circuits, and later served as a postdoctoral scholar at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Amodei has been widely recognised for his influence on the AI industry and safety discourse. Most recently, he was recognised on Time magazine’s The 100 Most Influential People in AI list.
