Daniel Yergin

Daniel Yergin is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author who transformed the study of energy from an industry story into a geopolitical one. For more than four decades, his work has explained how energy shapes economic power, international relations and the strategic decisions of nations.

As Vice Chairman of S&P Global, Daniel Yergin is one of the world’s foremost authorities on energy, geopolitics and the forces reshaping the international order.

His work explains how shifts in energy markets reshape economies, diplomacy, supply chains and the global balance of power. Whether examining the shale revolution, the transition to lower-carbon energy, US-China rivalry or the growing energy demands of AI, he makes the same case. Technology, politics and energy systems evolve together. None can be understood in isolation.

That perspective underpins some of the most influential books on energy and geopolitics. His Pulitzer Prize-winning The Prize is widely regarded as the definitive history of the global oil industry. While The Quest explored how energy innovation is reshaping the modern economy. His latest book, The New Map examined how climate ambitions, shifting alliances and energy security are redrawing the geopolitical landscape. Widely translated and internationally acclaimed, his books have become essential reading for those seeking to understand global change.

Daniel Yergin shapes the global energy agenda as Chair of CERAWeek by S&P Global. It is widely regarded as the world’s premier energy conference. Where heads of state, CEOs, ministers and innovators convene to debate the world’s energy future, climate, technology and economic security.

At S&P Global, Yergin also plays a leadership role in research on emerging trends. His work spans liquefied natural gas, critical minerals and the energy demands of artificial intelligence.

Yergin advised four US administrations through the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board. He also serves as Senior Trustee of the Brookings Institution. He sits on the Energy Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and advises both the Columbia University Center on Global Energy Policy and the MIT Energy Initiative.

His contributions to energy policy and strategic thinking have earned numerous international honours. These include the inaugural James Schlesinger Medal for Energy Security from the US Department of Energy and the first Carnot Prize from the University of Pennsylvania.
