Dan Siegel

Dan Siegel pioneered interpersonal neurobiology, bringing neuroscience, psychology and human relationships into a new framework for understanding the mind. A psychiatrist, bestselling author and founder of the Mindsight Institute, he has spent decades translating complex science into practical ideas about resilience, leadership, relationships and wellbeing.

A psychiatrist trained at Harvard and UCLA, Dan Siegel became interested in how relationships shape emotion, memory and development during his clinical work. That inquiry led to interpersonal neurobiology, the interdisciplinary framework he introduced through The Developing Mind in 1999. It brought neuroscience, psychology, attachment, systems theory and other fields into a single conversation about how minds develop and remain healthy.

Siegel’s influence now extends well beyond psychiatry. As founder and director of education of the Mindsight Institute, and founding co-director of UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center, he has spent decades translating complex science into ideas that clinicians, educators, parents and leaders can use. He coined “mindsight” to describe the capacity to perceive our own minds and those of others. His Wheel of Awareness has taken that principle into a practical form of mental training used by hundreds of thousands of people.

His publishing record reflects the breadth of that project. The Developing Mind became a foundational text in interpersonal neurobiology, while Mindsight, Aware, Mind and his parenting books brought his ideas to a much wider audience. Five of his books have become New York Times bestsellers. As founding editor of the Norton Professional Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology, he has also overseen more than 100 books extending the field across disciplines.

Dan Siegel’s recent work is pushing the argument further. IntraConnected examined the idea that identity is not simply an isolated “me”, but emerges through our relationships and wider systems. His 2024 book, Personality and Wholeness in Therapy, applies interpersonal neurobiology to nine developmental patterns, treating personality less as a fixed type than as something capable of change and integration.

In 2025, Siegel appeared at the Oslo Freedom Forum alongside activists and human-rights figures, speaking about resilience under extreme pressure. His work increasingly connects individual wellbeing with the health of relationships, communities and societies. For business leaders confronting stress, fragmentation and constant change, that makes his work less about mindfulness as a technique and more about understanding the human system itself.
