Cindy Taff

Cindy Taff is CEO and co-founder of Sage Geosystems, a Texas-based company pioneering geopressured geothermal energy storage. With more than 35 years of experience, she now leads the commercialisation of Sage’s “earthen battery” technology to deliver carbon-free power solutions.

Cindy Taff is the Chief Executive Officer of Texas-based geothermal energy company Sage Geosystems. The company’s technology stores energy by pumping water deep underground, building pressure within subsurface rock formations; when released, the pressurised water drives turbines to generate electricity.

Taff began her career as a production engineer with Shell plc, where her strong technical foundation and interest in well engineering and business development propelled her into progressive leadership roles. Over the course of her tenure, she served as completion engineering and operations team lead, completion engineering manager and discipline lead, and ultimately as Vice President of Shell’s Global Wells Discipline. In that role, she was responsible for setting technical standards and advancing drilling and completion operations worldwide. She later served as Vice President of Unconventional Shales and Logistics, overseeing large-scale operational execution, technology integration, and end-to-end supply chain performance across multiple assets.

Drawing on more than 35 years of energy industry experience, Taff co-founded Sage Geosystems in 2020 to commercialise next-generation geothermal solutions. Under Taff’s leadership, Sage Geosystems is advancing what could become the world’s first grid-connected geopressured geothermal energy storage system. The 3MW commercial facility, called EarthStore™, will use Sage Geosystems’ innovative technology that harvests energy from pressurised water stored deep underground. The facility will be able to store energy for short and long duration periods and can be paired with intermittent renewable energy sources, including wind and solar, to provide baseload, dispatchable power, and inertia to the electric grid.

Demonstrating strong market validation, Sage Geosystems announced a partnership with Meta Platforms to develop 150 megawatts of geothermal energy capacity to support the company’s data centers beginning in 2027.
