Chris Giles is the Financial Times’ economics commentator, known for his insightful analysis on monetary policy, inflation, and financial markets. He writes a fortnightly column and authors the popular weekly newsletter, Chris Giles on Central Banks, which serves as an essential guide to understanding money, interest rates, inflation trends, and the strategic thinking of central banks globally.
Before assuming his current role, Giles was economics editor and leader writer, where he shaped the publication’s coverage of economic policy and financial markets. His extensive experience in economic journalism is complemented by a background in economic research and public policy. Giles began his career as an economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), where he spent seven years conducting rigorous research on public finance, austerity, and economic policy. His work during this period earned him recognition for excellence in journalism from the Royal Statistical Society in both 2008 and 2012. Following his tenure at the IFS, he transitioned to journalism, reporting on economics for the BBC before joining Ofcom, the UK telecommunications regulator, where he contributed to economic policy oversight in the telecom sector.
Throughout his career, Giles has been honored with several prestigious awards, including the British Journalism Award for Business Journalist of the Year in 2012 and the Wincott Award for economic journalism in 2014, regarded as one of the highest accolades in UK economics reporting.
In addition to his journalism career, Giles was appointed Honorary Professor of Practice at the UCL Policy Lab in 2023. He holds degrees from the University of Cambridge and the University of London.
