Carmen Reinhart is one of the world’s leading economists and is currently the Minos A. Zombanakis Professor of the International Financial System at Harvard Kennedy School.
At an unprecedented time of crisis, Reinhart served as Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at The World Bank Group. From 2020 to 2022, she led the organisation through the coronavirus pandemic and its economic impact.
Reinhart’s areas of expertise are in international finance, and macroeconomics. For over a decade, her work has helped to inform the understanding of financial crises in both advanced economies and emerging markets.
She was formerly Chief Economist at Bear Stearns and has also held numerous roles in policy making. She was Senior Policy Advisor and Deputy Director at the International Monetary Fund, a member of the Advisory Panel of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Congressional Budget Office Panel of Economic Advisors, elected member of the Group of Thirty and a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.
Her best-selling book “This Time is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly”, documents the striking similarities of the recurring booms and busts that have characterised financial history. The seminal work, written with Kenneth Rogoff, has been translated to over 20 languages and won the Paul A. Samuelson Award.
Apart from her book, Reinhart has published extensively on capital flows, exchange rate policy, banking and sovereign debt crises, and contagion. She has contributed to the American Economic Review, Journal of Economics, Project Syndicate, National Bureau of Economics and The Japan Times to name a few.
In 2018, Carmen Reinhart was awarded the King Juan Carlos Prize in Economics and was the honorary recipient of the NABE’s Adam Smith Award. She holds a PhD in Economics from Columbia University.
