Bronwen Maddox

Bronwen Maddox has served as Director and Chief Executive of Chatham House since August 2022. She brings extensive experience across journalism, public policy, and financial analysis.

Prior to joining Chatham House, Maddox was Director of the Institute for Government from 2016 to 2022, where she led efforts to promote more effective government in the United Kingdom. From 2010 to 2016, she was Editor and Chief Executive of Prospect magazine.

Maddox previously spent 14 years at The Times, holding senior roles including Chief Foreign Commentator, Foreign Editor, US Editor, and Washington Bureau Chief. Earlier in her career, she worked at the Financial Times, where she led an award-winning investigation into Robert Maxwell and served as a special correspondent covering energy and the environment, as well as an editorial writer on microeconomics and corporate regulation. Before entering journalism, Maddox worked in finance as an investment analyst in the City and later as a director at Kleinwort Benson, where she led a highly regarded team analysing global media stocks.

She is an Honorary Governor of The Ditchley Foundation and an Honorary Fellow of the British Academy. Maddox is a frequent contributor of opinion columns to the Financial Times and a regular broadcaster on international affairs.

She holds a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from St John’s College, Oxford.
