But Shufelt’s journey did not begin in brewing. It began with a personal decision to stop drinking.
While building a successful career in finance, Bill Shufelt became increasingly committed to endurance sports and trail running. Giving up alcohol in 2013 improved his energy, sleep and performance. Yet it also exposed an obvious gap. Great beer existed. Great non-alcoholic beer did not.
Shufelt questioned why choosing a healthier lifestyle meant sacrificing flavour or feeling excluded from social occasions. He believed millions of consumers wanted better options. So in 2017, he left a successful Wall Street career to prove his point.
At that time, the non-alcoholic category represented less than one percent of US beer sales. Most industry experts believed the idea would fail. But Shufelt believed consumer behaviour was changing faster than the market recognised.
Athletic Brewing has since become America’s leading non-alcoholic brewery and one of the category’s biggest growth drivers. Its success has prompted global beer brands to rethink their own portfolios. More importantly, it helped redefine what modern drinking looks like.
