As founder of the Functional Sports Medicine Institute, Ara Suppiah developed the Functional Sports Medicine™ model. It is an integrated approach that combines allopathic medicine, functional medicine, biomechanics, nutrition, recovery science, and selected Eastern practices to address performance at its root.
For more than twenty years, Ara Suppiah has worked at the highest levels of professional sport, providing medical care to athletes across the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, DP World Tour, LIV Golf, and the ATP and WTA circuits, including multiple Ryder Cups on both the American and European sides. He currently serves as Head of Tournament Medical Services for LIV Golf, where he built the league’s medical infrastructure from the ground up. In his role, he also oversees anti-doping policy, recovery protocols, medical staffing, and performance-focused athlete services across international events.
What distinguishes Suppiah’s work is his insistence on understanding why an injury or performance breakdown occurs. In one case, after wearable data revealed sustained elevated heart rate throughout competition, a fatigued Tour golfer on the brink of withdrawal was identified as under-fuelled. A targeted increase in caloric intake restored performance within days, resulting in a top-20 finish. In another instance, genetic insight into carbohydrate metabolism helped an exhausted player rebound from barely making the cut to finishing third. These outcomes reflect Suppiah’s belief that performance medicine lives in precision.
Alongside his work on tour, Ara Suppiah continues to practice as an Emergency Room physician, grounding his integrative approach in rigorous clinical training. He is also a Chief Medical Analyst for NBC Sports’ Golf Channel, where he is trusted to translate complex medical situations into clear, responsible commentary for a global audience. As an educator and author, he trains practitioners through the Functional Sports Medicine Masterclass, equipping them to deliver science-based, individualised care beyond conventional return-to-play models.
Born in Malaysia and trained in the UK before building his career in the United States, Ara Suppiah’s mission is to redefine sports medicine so athletes — and high performers of all kinds — can protect their health, extend their careers, and perform at their best without sacrificing balance or longevity.
