As the John M. Duff Professor of Law at Yale, Amy Chua has spent over two decades confronting the world’s hardest questions: Why do free markets spark ethnic violence? How do empires fall? What does “success” really mean across cultures? And who decides?
A Harvard-trained lawyer who began her career on Wall Street structuring transnational deals across Latin America, Europe, and Asia, Chua left corporate law for academia in the 1990s. Her first book, World on Fire, warned in 2003, of the explosive consequences of exporting free-market democracy to multiethnic societies. It was a prescient diagnosis of populist backlash before the term entered public discourse. The book became a New York Times bestseller and remains essential reading for policymakers, economists, and anyone interested in globalisation’s discontents.
But it was Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, Amy Chua’s 2011 memoir on parenting and cultural discipline that turned her into a global icon and a national lightning rod. Vilified and celebrated in equal measure, Chua was thrust into the center of a cultural war she never intended to fight. Her unapologetic views on excellence, grit, and ambition collided with rising sensitivities on American campuses and in public life. Yet the controversy obscured what her students and colleagues already knew: Amy Chua is one of the most impactful mentors and intellectual catalysts in higher education today.
Amy Chua has helped shape legal minds across the political spectrum from Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ronan Farrow to US Vice President J.D. Vance. Her former students clerk for nearly every sitting Supreme Court Justice. In fact, Chua played a key role in connecting Vance with a literary agent after reading the draft of Hillbilly Elegy, an email exchange that helped birth a national political figure. She also supported biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy in launching his book Woke, Inc., now a cultural flashpoint in its own right.
Chua has spoken at the World Bank, Aspen, Davos, and the CIA. Her writings have appeared in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Financial Times.
